In summary:
2.5 billion paper cups are thrown away every year (5 times stretched around the globe if side by side)
Most cups thrown in bins or recycling will be rejected at the recycling plant as they contain 5% polyethylene coating which keeps the liquid warm
All the coffee chains are making efforts in this respect - some more than others, but there is still quite a bit of wastage
