Top 5 Ways to Dispose of Fresh Coffee Grounds
We recently had a question in from a club member who wanted some suggestions to how to get rid the old coffee grounds you end up with once a Kopi coffee is brewed, so we did some digging around and came up with our top 5 ways to dispose of fresh coffee grounds.
So firstly, coffee grounds on their own will not block a sink unless they are mixed together with any fat or grease which may cause them to expand. They're small enough and easily transported in water to avoid being a problem.
If you want to be a bite more eco-friendly or do something a bit more exciting with them, then these are the best options we've found:
- Mix with compost for your garden: this helps balance the pH levels of any compost bin's you are using and you can also use paper filters in the same way. Great for the plants and the worms too.
- Deodorant: dried grounds can be put in your shoes to remove nasty smells, and speaking of cheese, you can put them in a bowl in the fridge for the same effect.
- Cat & insect repellent: we've never tried this but apparently it will stop cats using your garden as their personal lavatory. It repells insects too such as slugs and ants.
- Skin exfoliant: massage some dry grounds onto your skin for a cheaper exfolianting cleanse or into your hair while washing. See, you get an amazing drink and to keep clean and beautiful at the same time!
- Fix a scratch on furniture: mix with a little water and it will make a good brown stain that might help to remove scratches on dark wood. You can even buy furniture made from recycled coffee grounds from a company called Curface.
Any more suggestions or things we've missed?
